Our packaging is called "SENIOR SANDVII." The packaging concept began when one of our members had a small business selling sandwiches as a breakfast option. The sandwich contains all five food groups: carbohydrates - whole wheat bread, protein - chicken breast, ham, processed sausages, cheese, and scrambled eggs, fats - from both plant and animal sources, coconut oil from egg frying, vegetables - lettuce, avocado, and mineral salt - from green lettuce and carrots. This sandwich is suitable for a healthy breakfast for people of all genders and ages. However, when we encountered the SCGP Packaging Speak Out 2023 project, our goal was to develop packaging specifically for the elderly and make it user-friendly. We wanted to go beyond the traditional triangular or rectangular boxes with regular flip-top lids that are inconvenient to open and handle. We aimed to add value to the product through an attractive design, convenience of use, and, if the packaging needed to be discarded, it could reduce waste. The packaging can be folded into a single sheet and also reduce multiple plastic pieces. Moreover, controlling the space within the packaging can make recycling easier, especially since paper is the primary material used for packaging. Next, the packaging structure is a closed rectangular paper box to maintain the shape of the sandwich, preventing it from getting crushed. This design also reduces the problem of sandwich deformation in the package. The top of the box has plastic attached to showcase the contents of the sandwich. Lastly, if the sandwich is not finished, it can be folded and locked at the top handle as before, making it easy to carry. Now, let's talk about using paper instead of actual paper towels, which comes from recyclable plastics like Polypropylene (PP) and Polyethylene (PE). These synthetic papers are waterproof, chemical-resistant, and sticky. However, they require further development to suit future packaging needs. We may need to study paper production and calculate new production ratios for this paper substitute material. In addition to being used for packaging, this synthetic paper could also become a new SCGP product. Regarding the packaging, it is both aesthetically pleasing and suitable for the target group. This design is responsive to the needs of the elderly as it features fresh and vibrant colors that convey a sense of vitality. The warm color tones used in the design symbolize the food product, including orange, red, and yellow, which help capture the attention of consumers, especially the elderly who may have a habit of eating smaller portions. Well-designed packaging like ours can stimulate the appetite of the elderly. Furthermore, the addition of green signifies the nutritional value of the product. This design also communicates the environmental aspect by incorporating green and brown colors. It conveys a sense of freshness and simplicity, making it highly suitable for the elderly. In terms of business development, as mentioned earlier, sandwiches are suitable for people of all genders and ages, leading to a growing sandwich market in the country. If we can offer packaging that is specifically designed for sandwiches and is user-friendly for opening, storing, discarding, and recycling, it would be highly attractive to the environmentally conscious businesses in the food industry. This packaging could not only increase the value of the product but also expand our customer base in various food-related industries. In terms of production in the industry, studying the recyclability of paper before producing it as packaging may take some time, but using paper and plastic for packaging is certainly feasible.
