When I was young - a time when children were not exposed to too many electronic devices as they are now, I often played folk games in my free time. Even though it's been a long time, I still haven't forgotten the first folk game that my father taught me to play, which was O An Quan also called Mandarin Square Capturing. On that day, I really wanted to bring this game to class to play with my friends, so I went to the bookstore to buy a convenient O An Quan chess set that could be carried everywhere. Unexpectedly, I found a multi-purpose chess set. In the chess set, in addition to mandarin square capturing chess, there are also Jungle game, Go chess, Ganh chess and checkerboard chess, all packed together in one set. That chess box was so mystifying and interesting, I bought it without hesitation. When I brought the chess set out to play with my friends, they were really interested in my chess set, sometimes they even supplicated to borrow the chess set to play with another class. I think that day when I decided to buy the chess set, it brought me a lot of benefits, it helped me have a healthy entertainment, connect with my friends and also exercise my brain ability in fierce chess matches.
It is a shame that most children today are no longer exposed to the same advantageous pleasures that I was. Therefore reviving these games is really necessary. Parents always want their children to stop spending too much time on electronic devices, but mostly need entertainment. Therefore replacing that time with playing chess between children or between children and parents is indeed not a bad idea. Helping to entertain children while learning, developing the critical thinking and essential skills in the future. Thereby also contributing to bringing old traditions to the younger generation - supporting children and adults connect with each other through Vietnamese folk games. Of course, not only can children play this synthetic chess set, but we adults can also play with friends to recall memories and kill time in our free time.

In order for a product on store shelves to have good sales volume, in addition to the decisive issue of product use and quality, branding and packaging are equally important. Here we have a product packaging design competition, which clearly speaks about the influence of product packaging on sales promotion. The eye-catching and aesthetic appearance of the packaging will a third of users decide whether to buy the item or not. Packaging will also direct consumers to approach the product. With the choice of packaging for a 5-in-1 chess set, we have devoted efforts and developed creativity and research to this product in order to attract different customers’ attention.
First, in terms of visual image , the main character on the packaging is the appearance of 8 distincetive animals, along with cute and funny images. This is the factor that helps to impress children when they see the toys. The animals appearing on the packaging are also not random, because we have based them on animals that are actually present in the Jungle game set, creating a coincidental waiting for users to discover. In addition, Jungle game is also a rather unsual chess set to many people. Putting the chess set as a representative will arouse people's interest and curiosity about new things.
In addition, the main color is mysterious, elegant charcoal purple combined with dynamic, eye-catching yellow details, stimulating psychology, attracting the attention of shoppers. Because according to color principles, purple and yellow are the two colors that attract visual attention first. In general, the style we follow is inspired by ancient Dong Ho paintings and modern cartoon-oriented character images. The material of Dong Ho is expressed through the use of large, colorful colors, clear black borders, motifs such as clouds, yin and yang circles, mat materials and matte printed paper. And the choice of fonts and patterns around the box is also a nostalgic design, with an old Vietnamese resonance.
Next, we cannot help but mention the figured we have designed for the characters on the packaging. It can be immediately observed that the wolf and the leopard have been dressed in costumes symbolizing ancient officials. Yes, this is the representing of the game that we - Vietnamese people - be all the rage, O An Quan chess. The confrontation image of the "leopard" mandarin and the "wolf" mandarin is equivalent to the battle of wits between two players when entering a fierce match of checkers to become the winner. In addition, other characters are also shaped according to the ancient clothing styles of different classes such as kings, mandarins, men, women, etc.
Finally, is the design of the shape of the box - a regular pentagon - the pentagonal package implicitly introduces the 5 types of games contained in the box (normally a chess box or toy box will be rectangular but in order to create more unique with a pentagon shape). The inside is divided into 4 compartments to hold: yellow pieces, purple pieces (representing white and black pieces), a paper chess board folded into a triangle and Jungle game pieces. The interesting box shape combined with the reasonable division of the box creates excitement for children and helps them arrange the chess sets more neatly and easier to use. Meeting the needs of product users. And in the design, there is another hidden meaning about the shape of the box, carrying an extremely special symbol of my country that we cleverly included so that everyone can guess...
More about the issue of bringing our chess box design into production. It is a box that can be assembled and folded in a simple, compact way with a length of each pentagonal side of only 10 cm, a box height of 5 cm, practical for commercial production. The material used is recyclable, environmentally friendly color-printed hard paper, in accordance with the contest criteria. Open and close convenience the box based on the magnet on the circle in the center.
In conclusion, the idea that we put into the design of the chess box is both strange and familiar, and is the desire to create a toy box that stands out among the variety of other toys on the market. It is a special difference of Vietnamese folk intellectual games that are almost about to go into oblivion. It is also the rebirth of a toy from that time to today's youth, a nostalgia for adults who were once children. A 5-in-1 chess box packaging, not only impressive for children but also appealing for adults.
